Converse, CONVERSE, face to face, mind to mind!!!
We, human beings, are social creatures
by nature. For us socialising and engaging with others in a conversation is
almost as crucial for survival as eating and breathing. With time, our ways of
communicating has evolved. With the development of technology and advancement
in medium of communication, there are many channels and modalities through
which one can communicate. Gone are the good golden days when people used to
sit together and enjoy the “face to face” interactions. The regular one to one
interactions are replaced by the web conferencing, instant messaging and
emails.
The social media has no doubt played an
important role in reviving and connecting with our long lost pals and family
members through its medium. Individuals who are living away from their families
remain connected with them. At the professional level, organisations have found
a new channel of communication through the use of online platforms. These
platforms are a blessing in disguise for the organisations which have their
presence at multiple geographical locations. The online communication is handy,
comes easy on the pocket. Thanks to the ever advancing technology, the barriers
of geographical distances have been successfully overcome.
But, amidst all this we are losing on nurturing
our personal relations. The essence of personal touch is lost on these medium.
There were times when people believed in sharing their joys and sorrows with
each other. People believed in sharing their joys and sorrow with each other. People
used to care for each other irrespective of their gender, caste and age. The selfless
and strong bonds successfully stood the test of time. With the advancement of
technology, people have been successful in overcoming the geographical
boundaries. But the emotional distances have increased. The personal touch that
face to face communication has is incomparable. Moreover, the body language
speaks volumes about the person. The people involved in face to face
communication enjoy the undivided attention of each other which is not true in
the case of messaging and emails.
Rather there are chances of developing
misunderstandings due to the misinterpretation of the information. The words
can be easily misinterpreted if they are isolated from the body language. Nothing
can replace the value of face to face communication. The personal and
professional problems can be better sorted out while talking face to face with
each other. Often there is also a synergy that is achieved which ignites
discussion and innovative thinking. Sadly, people do communicate more often
with their family members and friends because of technology, but the quality of
that communication has become weaker. Today’s tech-savvy generation is actually
struggling to understand emotions and create strong relationships. Their socialising
is limited to the screen of laptops and mobile devices. People are unable to
develop their verbal and communication skills and emotional intelligence,
thereby hampering the overall development of and individual.
Never ever a text or message can
express the emotions of sadness across to the person in their times of need. While
technology has been able to bring communities and people closer together, it is
up to us to foster those connections and nurture them through old fashioned
face-to-face encounters. It is vital for us as a human species to be able to
continue to connect with others without hiding behind a screen.
